About the Owner

Owner: Deatrice Simpson
Business Experience: 15 years
Contractor, CBE, SBE, LDBE, Section 3

Born to working-class parents in Philadelphia, PA. Deatrice grew up decorating, painting, and drawing on everything she could get her hands on. Deatrice's mother was a brave and trusting woman. Deatrice would not have accomplished so much without her. Her mom was her greatest cheerleader. Which allowed her at the age of 12 to paint her parent's home, reposition the furniture, and always be the first to volunteer to decorate for all holidays. One project she did was paint her family home orange. Before, “Orange was the new black." She also tiled her parent's floors and created focus walls throughout her home. Little did she know that the focus walls would become a rave 25 years later. Over the years, many homes of her family and friends have been redesigned by her. Deatrice’s high school even petitioned her to paint the school walls ornamentally. She has never stopped designing. In fact, she studied architecture at Spring Garden College in Philadelphia, as well as Maryland University.

Deatrice was destined to travel. As a toddler, she would ask her mother daily, what’s above the trees? Her mother struggled with this nagging question every day, not knowing that her baby girl was asking: “what’s out there in the world? and what is my opportunity?” Deatrice Joined the military at 19, became a Sergeant at age 22, and continued to spend years in the military traveling, trying to find what was beyond the trees. She worked in military intelligence and communications, studying languages and people. She lived in Germany, traveling throughout Europe and Korea. While working at the Pentagon as an information Specialist, she experienced International horror and she will never forget the shock of places like the “Red light district” in Holland, similar to 14th St DC in the early 90s. The military taught her to love people, even as much as she loves making living spaces beautiful. Finally, she completed training at UMUC in International Studies and East-Asian Arts. Naturally, after her time in the military, she returned to her first love, designing and redefining spaces. She then took on her second love for culturally diverse people and travel. Somehow she stumbled upon the idea of building a business. Business development, property management, and real estate investing seem to come to her, plus she can take an ordinary space from looking unappealable to beautiful. She has a feminine perspective and feminine Point-of-view in the general contracting atmosphere. NDS Fix-IT was reborn in 2016. Today, Deatrice Simpson is the owner of a well-respected, construction, environmental, and design firm located in the Nation’s Capital.

“We believe everyone can and should live in a safe and beautiful environment.”
